Aledo starting pitcher Cody Bradford threw six shutout innings and Jacob Ashkinos followed with a shutout inning in relief as the pair led the Bearcats to a 2-0 victory over the Joshua Owls Tuesday night in the District 8-5A baseball opener at Joshua.

Bradford allowed just three hits while issuing three walks and striking out nine in six innings. Ashkinos allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning but came back to retire the next three batters, including two strikeouts.

The Bearcats scored all of the runs they would need in the top of the fifth inning.

Calloway Shands hit a one-out single to right field and Rhett Anderson followed with a walk to put runners at first and second base.

The next batter, Hunter Rosson, slashed a single to right field to plate Shands for a 1-0 lead.

Logan Bridges followed and executed a perfectly-placed safety squeeze bunt that drove in Anderson for a 2-0 lead.

Bradford walked two Owls in the sixth, but with two outs and two runners on he struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Ashkinos retired three of the four batters he faced in the seventh to collect the save.

In other Aledo High School sports on Tuesday, the Ladycats softball team defeated Everman, 10-0, in a noon start, but fell this evening at Burleson High School, 3-2.

In the district soccer finales, the Ladycats took a 4-0 win at Cleburne, but the Bearcats and Cleburne fought to a 1-1 tie with the Yellowjackets winning the overtime shootout, 4-3.

Both the Ladycats and Bearcats soccer teams have secured second place and will be the second seeds from District 8-5A in the upcoming playoffs.
