Racquet Cats win 5-5A titles

Qualify nine for regional tournament

On April 29-30, the Varsity tennis team competed in the 5-5A District Tournament at TCU and earned 10 medals, as well as first-place trophies for both the boys and girls varsity teams.

Three rounds of matches were held on Day 1 of the tournament, and at the conclusion of the day Aledo found itself with team members in four finals matches and several matches for third place.

Kenley Germany and Lila Satterfield defeated Azle (6-4, 6-1) to earn the Girls Doubles district championship. Craig Mason and Benjamin Farmer fell to Northwest in two close sets, (5-7, 5-7) earning second place in the Boys Doubles category.

The final match in Mixed Doubles was an Aledo vs. Aledo battle as Scott Mason and Elli Kate Bussmeir took on Jacob Heckathorn and Patrice Loftin. Mason and Bussmeir earned first place in a close match, (6-4, 7-5), while Heckathorn and Loftin took second place.

Bryanna Orr fell to Rider (2-6, 1-6) and earned 2nd place in Girls Singles.  Freshman Ben Kurth won his match for third place (6-3, 6-4) and earned a playback match with Rider (1-6, 0-6). He retained his third-place finish and will serve as an alternate regional qualifier.

Contributing to the team award were several fourth-place finishes. Will Beyer and Francois Britz fell to Azle (4-6, 2-6). Gracie Heydman and Natalie Nawrocki battled Northwest (1-6, 4-6) and Sydney Byrd fell to Rider (4-6, 4-6).

Germany, Satterfield, C. Mason, Farmer, S. Mason, Bussmeir, Heckathorn, Loftin and Orr will all compete in the Region I Tournament in Lubbock on May 8-9.
